GOOD TO KNOW!

This page is devoted to driving facts or situations that are good for all drivers to know.  It is important for all new drivers to understand and obey the rules of the road to be a successful and safe driver.  And , even experienced drivers forget some basic rules of the road.  This page will be updated monthly to review some basic topics of driving.

JANUARY 2026 DRIVING TIP:
WHERE TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN?

New drivers are often confused as to where to stop when approaching a STOP sign: they tend to stop too far away and experienced drivers tend to stop too far over the line.  Here are some tips to consider when approaching a STOP sign:
1. there is a crosswalk at every intersection, even if it is not marked.
2. stopping beyond the stop line will block the path of pedestrians
3. stopping too soon will confuse drivers behind you
The graphic below explains where you should be stopping depending on the configuration of the intersection.
              a. If it is NOT an all way stop, drivers should stop at the line/sign and then creep out to be able to see traffic.  The first stop is for pedestrians, the second stop is to view traffic.
                b. If it is an all way stop, you do not need to do a second stop.  In that case, right of way rules state that you go in the order you arrive and if you and another car get to the intersection at the same time, it is the vehicle on the right that goes first.
